I use both calf's tail and calf's body hair. The body hair is shorter and straighter, and many of the problems with tail hair are overcome. It makes nice wings on trout flies from 10 -26 hook size, Some people tell me it is only used on Salmon and sea trout flies, Well I use it like Dav MacPhail on lake and river flies for grayling, brown and Rainbow flies. It handles well, stacks well and works well with Kevlar, it is brilliant.
