Veniard Coastal Deer Hair
is a fine natural deer hair selected for fly tying applications where a lighter, more refined fibre is required. Its barred markings and contrasting tips add natural definition to dry-fly wings and help produce the mottled appearance associated with many adult insects.
The fibres are approximately 2cm to 4cm long, providing useful scope for tying smaller and medium-sized wings according to the proportions of the chosen pattern. The material also has very little underfur, reducing the amount of waste that must be combed or picked out before the hair is aligned and secured.
This Coastal Deer Hair is supplied attached to the natural skin. As with any natural fly tying material, each piece varies slightly in colour, barring, fibre length and overall appearance. These differences are part of the character of the material rather than a defect.

Coastal Deer Hair top tips
- Select hair from an area of the patch where the fibre length suits the fly size you are tying.
- Cut a small bunch close to the skin rather than pulling the fibres out.
- Remove any remaining underfur and short fibres before stacking or tying in.
- Use a hair stacker when an even line of tips is required for wings.
- Avoid using too much hair on smaller patterns, as an oversized wing can affect the proportions of the fly.
- Keep thread wraps firm and controlled, but avoid excessive pressure that may cause the hair to flare more than intended.
- Make the first securing wraps carefully while holding the bunch in position.
- Check the natural barring before cutting so the most attractive section remains visible in the finished wing.
- Use sharp, fine-point scissors to trim waste ends cleanly.
