Cock Pheasant Colour Extracted & Dyed Centre Tails deliver vivid, clean colour through one of the most adaptable natural feathers on the fly-tying bench. Each complete centre tail is bleached to a light buff before dyeing, creating brightly coloured fibres for bodies, tails, wing cases and knotted legs.
Supplied to troutcatchers by Veniard, each pack contains one full centre-tail feather , choose this version when strong dyed colour is more important to the dressing than pronounced natural barring.

A colour-extracted pheasant tail begins as a complete natural Cock Pheasant Centre Tail. Its original colouring is lightened to a pale buff before the feather is dyed, allowing the selected shade to appear considerably brighter and cleaner than it would over the naturally dark feather.
The process retains the small hooks along the fibres and preserves the retained fibre structure that helps a bunch of fibres hold together when wound or positioned on a hook. These long fibres can be used for bodies, tails and wing cases, as well as being separated and knotted to produce jointed legs on terrestrial patterns.
Each standard pack contains one full centre-tail feather. As this is a natural fly tying feather, exact length, fibre density, markings and shade may vary slightly between individual packs.
Colour extraction greatly reduces the original dark markings, resulting in minimal natural barring compared with a standard Cock Pheasant Centre Tail. Fly tyers wanting a clearly barred, traditional appearance should select the standard version. These extracted and dyed feathers are intended for cleaner, brighter and more consistent-looking colour.
Available in Natural Buff, Yellow, Fluorescent Yellow, Orange, Fluorescent Orange, Red, Fiery Brown, Claret, Medium Olive, Golden Olive and Heron Grey.

Veniard Cock Pheasant Colour Extracted & Dyed Centre Tails top tips

  • Choose colour-extracted tails when bright, clean colour is more important than pronounced natural barring.
  • Select the standard Cock Pheasant Centre Tail when the dressing requires stronger dark markings.
  • Keep the natural fibre tips aligned before tying them in as a tail.
  • Take fibres from the same area of the feather when tying a matching batch of flies.
  • Tie fibres in by their finer ends when creating a tapered abdomen.
  • Wind the fibres in close, even turns to form a neat body.
  • Counter-wind fine copper wire through the body to add segmentation and improve durability.
  • Flatten and align a small bunch before pulling the fibres over a thorax to form a wing case.
  • Separate individual fibres and knot them carefully when the pattern requires articulated legs.
  • Use the fluorescent shades where the dressing calls for a brighter body, tail or contrasting feature.
  • Avoid excessive thread pressure when initially securing a bunch, as the fibres can twist or separate.
  • Store the feather dry and reasonably flat to protect the tips and fibre alignment.
  • Allow for natural differences when matching feathers or preparing a large batch of flies.

The black stripe on the dyed red and heron grey was nearly invisible, so I was not so happy about that.

Thank you for your comments - You chose the Extracted Dyed Tail - This product is bleached then dyed so there would be very minimal natural barring coming through. The Cock Pheasant Centre Tail is the non-extracted product which you may wish to purchase next time if you want the barring. If you wish to return to exchange please contact us. Thank you again.
