Cock Pheasant Knotted Tail provides ready-knotted pheasant fibres for creating convincing legs on Daddy Long Legs, hopper and other terrestrial fly patterns, without the time-consuming job of tying each knot by hand.

Made from a cock pheasant centre-tail feather piece, each fibre is prepared with two knots to create the segmented, jointed appearance of an insect leg. This gives the finished fly a more natural, articulated profile than a straight feather fibre. The feather is supplied on its original quill, allowing fly tyers to remove individual fibres as required.
Pre-knotted fibres are particularly useful for Daddy Long Legs and hopper patterns, where long, clearly defined legs form an important part of the fly’s outline. Simply select a fibre, trim it to the required length and tie it into the pattern.
Suitable for both experienced and developing fly tyers, Cock Pheasant Knotted Tail saves considerable preparation time and is available from troutcatchers in Natural, Claret, Black, Orange and Red.
A consistent Five Star reviewed fly tying material. each stem measures approximately 14cm, or over five inches. As this is a natural feather material, the usable fibre length, shape, markings and density will vary slightly from one piece to another.

Veniard Cock Pheasant Knotted Tail Top Tips

  • Remove fibres carefully from the quill to avoid damaging the knots or splitting the fibre.
  • Select fibres with similar length, thickness and markings when tying paired legs.
  • Tie the fibre in securely above or below the body according to the chosen fly pattern.
  • Position the knots so the leg bends naturally away from the fly.
  • Use minimal thread pressure initially, then tighten once the leg angle is correct.
  • Avoid placing the thread directly over a knot, as this may make positioning less consistent.
  • Trim the butt ends only after checking that the legs sit evenly on both sides.
  • Use Natural for traditional terrestrial imitations and darker colours where a stronger silhouette is required.
  • Consider Orange or Red for brighter attractor patterns rather than exact natural imitations.
  • Remember that feather size, markings and fibre density will vary because each piece is natural.

FAQs- Veniard Cock Pheasant Knotted Tail

How to Remove and Tie In the Knotted Fibres
Separate the required fibre from the surrounding feather fibres and pull or cut it carefully from the quill. Tie in the unknotted butt section, leaving the knots and tapered tip extending to form the visible leg.

How to Select a Colour
Natural is the most traditional choice for Daddy Long Legs and hopper imitations. Black and Claret create darker profiles, while Orange and Red may be used when tying brighter terrestrial or attractor variations.

Are the fibres already knotted?
Yes. The fibres are supplied with the knots already formed, reducing the need to knot each individual pheasant-tail fibre at the tying bench.

What does double knotted mean?
Each prepared fibre has two knots. These create separate bends along the fibre, helping it resemble the segmented joints of an insect leg.

What fly patterns use Cock Pheasant Knotted Tail?
It is most closely associated with Daddy Long Legs, Crane Fly and hopper patterns. It may also be used on other terrestrial flies requiring long, jointed-looking legs.

Is the material supplied loose?
No. The knotted fibres are supplied attached to the original centre-tail quill. Individual fibres can be selected and removed as required.

How long is each stem?
Each Cock Pheasant Knotted Tail stem is approximately 14cm long, which is over five inches. As this is a natural product, measurements may vary slightly.

Will every feather look identical?
No. Natural feathers vary in markings, fibre length, shape and density. Dyed feathers may also show some natural variation beneath the colour.
