Deer Belly Hair gives fly tyers the stiffness, density and vivid colour needed to create bold spun heads and shaped bodies for fry, frog, pike and saltwater flies. Supplied to troutcatchers by Veniard, this versatile natural fly tying material is particularly useful when standard deer hair does not provide enough density or structure.

Veniard Deer Belly Hair is stiffer and denser than standard deer hair, making it especially useful for spinning and shaping fly heads. The material can be packed around the hook shank before being carefully trimmed to create rounded, tapered or more angular profiles.
This bright coloured fly tying material is well suited to pike and saltwater flies, as well as fry and frog patterns where a dense, clearly defined head or body is required. It can also be combined with bucktail, flash, synthetic fibres, hackles and rubber legs to build movement behind the shaped deer hair section.
Each pack contains a patch measuring approximately 14 x 10 cm. A choice of colours is available, allowing fly tyers to match natural baitfish shades, add contrast or produce bright attractor-style patterns. As deer hair is a natural material, minor variation between patches should be expected.

Deer Belly Hair Top Tips

  • Use a strong fly tying thread that can apply firm pressure without breaking.
  • Remove loose underfur before tying in the hair, as this helps the fibres pack more cleanly.
  • Work with manageable bunches rather than trying to spin too much hair at once.
  • Allow enough space behind the hook eye for the final bunches of hair and finishing turns.
  • Add several smaller sections when building a dense head or body. This usually gives greater control than using one large bunch.
