Mallard Duck Wing Quills Grey offers the restrained grey tone and clean edges needed for traditional feather-wing dressings. The quills can be paired so both sides of a wing match in length, angle and natural texture.

Veniard Mallard Duck Wing Quills Grey for Fly Tying

: Ten grey mallard wing quills per packet. Select slips of equal width from matching quills, bring their edges together and secure them with two controlled loose turns before tightening. The result is a slim profile that reads as a natural insect wing rather than a bulky feather clump. At troutcatchers, Mallard Duck Wing Quills Blue White Tip (Butcher Blues) provides the distinctive blue-and-white-tipped wing sections for a traditional Butcher.

Mallard Duck Wing Quills Grey Key Features and Benefits

  • A ten-quill pack gives multiple winging sections for consistent repeat dressings.
  • Grey feathers provide a subdued outline on clear water when a bright wing would dominate.
  • Separate left- and right-hand slips to build wings that sit evenly over the hook.

Top Tips for Tying with Mallard Duck Wing Quills Grey

  • Trim only the amount needed for each wing, keeping the unused quill flat and protected.
  • Measure the paired slips against the hook shank before taking the first thread turn.
  • Keep the tying thread smooth and avoid overtightening until the slips are positioned.

Fly Patterns and Uses for Mallard Duck Wing Quills Grey

  • Blue Dun dry fly: Matched grey wing slips give a neat upright wing that complements a slim dun body on the surface.
  • March Brown wet fly: A folded pair of slips makes the traditional roofed wing and a recognisable mottled fly silhouette.
  • Wickham’s Fancy: Grey wing slips provide a quieter option above the bright gold body where the imitation needs less contrast.
  • Wet Hare’s Ear: A low, narrow grey wing helps the dressing look like a vulnerable emerging insect rather than a heavily dressed attractor.

Mallard Duck Wing Quills Grey Frequently Asked Questions

How do I stop the paired wing slips splitting?

Keep both slips the same width, align the fibres before tying down and tighten the thread gradually to avoid rolling the wing.

Are these suitable for very small dry flies?

Yes, take narrow slips from the finer portions of the quill and reduce the amount of wing to suit the hook.

What distinguishes grey quills from Butcher Blues?

Grey quills give understated wet or dry wings, while Butcher Blues have the blue and white tips required by the named Butcher dressing.

Which fly-tying materials complement Mallard Duck Wing Quills Grey?

For the blue-and-white wing of a classic Butcher choose Mallard Duck Wing Quills Blue White Tip (Butcher Blues); for natural mottled quill slips compare English Partridge Whole Wings.

I needed some wings for Invictas and other winged wets and dries, the mallard primary feathers do the trick ( as used by Davie McPhail) . There's 10 feathers in a packet and that adds up to a lot of wings!
