• Use a sharp blade or fine scissors to keep cuts clean, especially when making smaller booby eyes.
• Cut slightly larger than needed first, then trim back carefully for a neater shape.
• For consistent booby eyes, cut a strip first, then divide it into even sections.
• Match foam colour to the job: bright colours for attraction, natural tones for terrestrials, shell backs and subtle floating patterns.
• Keep offcuts, as smaller pieces are useful for shell backs, suspender details and small foam-bodied flies.
• When tying detached bodies, shape the foam before tying in so the finished fly stays balanced.
