Turrall Dyed Deer Skin brings bold colour, natural buoyancy and dependable workability to spun, clipped and shaped fly patterns. they gives fly tyers useful scope for forming packed bodies, sculpted heads and buoyant surface patterns.
Available in 13 colours, this Turrall fly tying material is a versatile choice for Muddlers, caddis patterns, Bombers, wake flies and other designs that rely on the distinctive structure of deer hair.

Turrall Dyed Deer Skin consists of premium deer hair on soft-tanned skin, dyed using a process designed to retain the integrity and working properties of the fibres. The 30–60mm length range provides enough material for tying a variety of fly sizes, particularly where the hair needs to be spun around the hook and clipped into shape.
The natural buoyancy and structure of deer hair make it especially useful for surface patterns, wake flies and streamers with shaped heads. When packed firmly around the hook shank, the material can be trimmed with scissors or a razor blade to create compact bodies, tapered profiles and the familiar head of a Muddler Minnow.
Fly tyers can choose from natural and subdued fishing shades as well as bright attractor colours. Troutcatchers stocks the range for anglers tying everything from traditional trout patterns to salmon, sea trout and predator flies where a buoyant or water-pushing deer hair profile is required.

Turrall Dyed Deer Skin key features

  • 30–60mm deer hair fibres provide useful length for spinning, stacking, clipping and shaping.
  • Supplied on soft-tanned skin, allowing small bunches of hair to be cut away as required.
  • Dyeing process is designed to preserve fibre integrity and workability.
  • Retains the natural buoyancy needed for dry flies, wake flies and surface patterns.
  • Can be packed and sculpted to form rounded, tapered or flattened profiles.
  • Well suited to Muddler-style heads, clipped bodies and buoyant terrestrials.
  • Available in 13 useful fly tying colours for natural imitations and bright attractor patterns.
  • Suitable for trout, salmon, sea trout and selected predator fly designs.
  • Hair can be mixed with other colours to create mottled or contrasting effects.
  • Natural material means fibre texture, density and shade may vary slightly between pieces.
  • Available colours - Black - Blue - Dark Brown - Fl. Orange - Green - Lime Green - Natural - Orange - Purple - Red - White - Yellow - Olive

Turrall Dyed Deer Skin top tips

  • Cut a small bunch close to the skin rather than pulling the fibres out. This helps retain their full usable length.
  • Remove loose underfur and short fibres before spinning. A fine comb or repeated pinching between your fingers works well.
  • Use a strong, low-stretch fly tying thread when spinning and clipping deer hair, as considerable pressure may be needed to flare and secure the material.
  • Apply thread tension gradually. Allow the first turn to position the bunch, then tighten the next turns to encourage the hair to flare.
  • Pack each bunch backwards before adding the next section when forming a dense body or Muddler head.
  • Rotate colours around the hook or layer them along the shank to create barred, segmented or contrasting effects.
  • Leave the eye of the hook clear. Dense deer hair can quickly crowd the finishing area.
  • Make the initial trim with scissors, then refine the profile with a fresh razor blade where appropriate.
  • Bend a double-edged razor blade carefully to create smooth rounded bodies. Handle exposed blades with care and dispose of them safely.
  • Trim a little at a time. Material removed from a clipped body cannot be replaced easily.
  • Keep bright colours such as Fl. Orange, Lime Green and Yellow for visible attractor sections, hot spots or high-contrast surface flies.
  • Natural, Dark Brown, Olive and Black are useful where a subdued or more imitative profile is required.
  • Store the material dry and away from prolonged direct sunlight to help protect the skin and dyed fibres.
  • As deer hair is a natural material, inspect the individual patch and select the area whose fibre length and texture best suits the fly being tied.

Fishing flies that use Turrall Dyed Deer Skin Fly Tying Material

  • Muddler Minnow heads and bodies – deer hair is spun and clipped to form the pattern’s distinctive buoyant head.
  • Goddard Caddis – tightly packed hair can be shaped into a compact caddis body.
  • Deer Hair Sedge – used for buoyant bodies, heads or wings depending on the dressing.
  • Irresistible – clipped deer hair forms the buoyant body of this traditional dry fly.
  • Salmon Bomber – spun and clipped hair creates the substantial floating body.
  • Dahlberg Diver – shaped hair forms a diving head that pushes water when retrieved.
  • Deer hair mouse – packed hair can be sculpted into a broad, buoyant surface profile.
  • Muddler-style sea trout flies – useful for creating wake, disturbance and a pronounced head.
  • Surface terrestrials – clipped hair can imitate beetles, bugs and other land-based insects.
  • Predator divers and surface flies – suitable where a buoyant head and strong water displacement are required.
  • Streamers – a clipped deer hair head can add bulk and movement without relying solely on synthetic materials.
  • Wake flies – deer hair can help a fly sit high and create a visible surface disturbance.
Suitability for fine wings and smaller dry flies will depend on the texture and diameter of the fibres in the individual patch.
