Veniard Amadou Patch is a traditional natural amadou fly dryer used to remove moisture from saturated dry flies without crushing or unnecessarily disturbing their hackles. Made using absorbent amadou fungus and housed in a smart leatherette holder, it gives river and stillwater anglers a quick way to revive CDC, hackled and other dry-fly patterns while fishing.

The Veniard Amadou Patch uses a processed layer of amadou, a spongy natural material obtained from bracket fungus and used by fly anglers for more than a century. Place a wet fly between the drying surfaces and press gently to draw out moisture, rather than rubbing or squeezing the dressing.
This is particularly useful for waterlogged dry flies after landing a fish, missing a take or fishing through rain and spray. Removing the moisture helps restore the fly’s natural form and prepares it for further treatment with a suitable floatant when required. It is especially valuable for delicate CDC and hackled patterns, where rough handling can flatten fibres and reduce the fly’s ability to sit correctly in the surface.
The leatherette holder protects the amadou when it is not in use, while the fitted D-ring allows it to be carried on a fishing waistcoat, chest pack, lanyard or zinger. Suitable for fly anglers of every experience level, it is a practical alternative to relying solely on disposable tissue and complements rather than necessarily replaces gel, oil or powdered floatants.
Available from troutcatchers, the Veniard Amadou Patch is a compact, long-established dry-fly accessory for anglers who want to spend less time changing saturated flies and more time presenting the right pattern.

  • Smart leatherette holder protects the natural drying material.
  • D-ring provides easy attachment to a waistcoat, lanyard, pack or zinger.
  • Embossed Veniard logo provides a neat, recognisable finish.
  • Compact enough to remain readily accessible during mobile river fishing.

  • Reusable and does not require refilling with powder.
  • Each patch may differ slightly because amadou is a natural material.

Veniard Amadou Patch Top Tips

  • Hold the wet fly by the hook bend where practical, avoiding unnecessary contact with the wings and hackles.
  • Open the patch and place the fly gently between the amadou surfaces.
  • Press lightly for a few seconds rather than squeezing hard or rubbing the fly.
  • Repeat with a dry area of the patch when dealing with a heavily saturated fly.
  • Check that the hackle fibres and wings have returned to their intended position before recasting.
  • Use a few controlled false casts to remove any remaining surface moisture.
  • Apply a small amount of the correct floatant after drying when the pattern requires it.
  • Use a CDC-compatible oil or gel sparingly on CDC patterns; excessive treatment can cause fibres to clump.
  • Dry the fly before adding more floatant. Applying treatment directly to a waterlogged fly can trap moisture and reduce effectiveness.
  • Attach the patch to a zinger or an easily reached D-ring rather than storing it at the bottom of a pocket.
  • Allow the patch to air-dry naturally after fishing before placing it in long-term storage.
  • Do not expect every patch to have identical colour, thickness or surface texture, as the working material is natural.

Veniard Amadou Patch FAQ

What is an amadou patch used for?
An amadou patch absorbs water from saturated dry flies. It helps an angler restore a fly after it has become soaked through fishing, rain, spray or contact with a fish.

How do you use the Veniard Amadou Patch?
Place the wet fly gently between the amadou surfaces and press lightly for several seconds. Do not rub the fly, as this may distort the hackle, wing or body materials.

Can the Veniard Amadou Patch be used on CDC flies?
Yes. It is particularly useful for drying CDC flies because it removes moisture without the aggressive rubbing that can damage or mat delicate CDC fibres.

Do I still need to apply fly floatant?
Possibly. Amadou removes moisture but is not itself a permanent flotation treatment. Once the fly has been dried, apply a suitable gel, oil or powder when the fly pattern and fishing conditions require it.

Is amadou better than powdered fly desiccant?
The two products work differently. Amadou absorbs moisture through gentle pressure and does not leave powder on the fly. A powdered desiccant may both dry and coat the fly. Some anglers carry both and choose according to the pattern being fished.

Will every Veniard Amadou Patch look identical?
No. Amadou is a natural material, so its shade, thickness and texture can vary. The colour of the outer holder may also differ slightly between production batches. These cosmetic variations do not necessarily indicate a fault.

How does the patch attach to a fishing waistcoat?
The holder has a D-ring that can be connected to a waistcoat attachment point, lanyard, chest pack or separate fly-fishing zinger.

Is it suitable for beginners?
Yes. Its operation is straightforward, although beginners should learn to press the fly gently and use the correct type and quantity of floatant afterwards.

Some hard/rough spots in the amadou, therefore not 5 stars but 4. But very usable nevertheless.

Amadou is a rare natural fungus, it will work no problem, it will soften with use, we find it indispensable when dry fly fishing, any problems, please do not hesitate to contact us.

A well made product.
I have not yet had the opportunity to use the patch yet but Amadou's ability to remove water from used dry flies is well known. I will have the patch to hand on my next trout fishing trip, the ring means it can be easily clipped to a fishing waistcoat or lanyard.
