Bleached & Dyed Deer Hair brings strong, useful colour choices to one of fly tying’s most versatile natural materials. Produced by Veniard, the hair is first bleached and tanned to near white before being dyed, helping the finished colour show clearly across the fibres.
Fly tyers use dyed deer hair for wings, bodies, heads and clipped shapes across dry flies, muddlers, sedges, terrestrial patterns and larger surface flies.

Veniard Bleached & Dyed Deer Hair

is a prepared natural fly tying material supplied as an individual patch. The original hair is tanned to near white before dyeing, allowing colours to appear cleaner and more prominent than they may on untreated darker hair.
Depending on the individual fibres and the fly being tied, deer hair can be stacked for wings, tied as a tail or body component, or spun and trimmed to create shaped heads and buoyant bodies. Removing loose underfur before tying helps the fibres sit more neatly and gives the thread a firmer grip.
Each patch is approximately 2.25 x 2.5 inches, providing enough material for numerous flies while remaining easy to store alongside other fly tying hair and fur. Available from troutcatchers in a choice of seven colours, it allows fly tyers to match established dressings or experiment with more visible attractor patterns.

Bleached & Dyed Deer Hair Top Tips

  • Remove loose underfur and short fibres with a comb or your fingers before tying the hair onto the hook.
  • For stacked wings, align the tips in a hair stacker before transferring the bundle to the hook.
  • Use smaller bunches rather than one oversized clump. They are easier to control and less likely to twist around the hook.
  • When spinning deer hair, begin with a controlled thread wrap before increasing tension and allowing the fibres to flare.
  • Strong fly tying thread is helpful when compressing or spinning hair, although the correct thread size will depend on the hook and fly pattern.
  • Pack spun bunches firmly if you want a dense body or head, but avoid crowding the hook eye.
  • Use sharp scissors for general shaping and a fresh razor blade when creating smooth, close-trimmed bodies.
  • Trim gradually. It is much easier to remove more hair than to replace hair that has been cut too short.
  • Select straighter fibres with even tips for wings and tails.
  • Keep shorter or more irregular fibres for clipped heads, bodies and general shaping.
  • Colours may appear slightly different between screens, so select according to the named colour rather than relying solely on monitor appearance.

Got the black coloured hair. Looks very well died, very deep colour. Individual hairs are quite fine, probably a result fo the dyeing process, but it spins very easily.
