Ephemera Pure Fly Tying Silk is a beautifully fine, lustrous pure silk for North Country spiders, traditional wet flies and classic salmon dressings, with the control that makes tidy bodies such a pleasure to tie.

Ephemera Pure Fly Tying Silk for Traditional Fly Patterns

If you have tied with Pearsall Gossamer Fly Tying Silk, Ephemera will feel like a welcome addition to your fly-tying bench. Made in France by Au Ver à Soie, it gives the smooth wraps and rich silk finish that made traditional spider patterns so appealing. Many former Pearsall’s customers now tie happily with Ephemera, and some prefer it. Colours are not exact copies of the old numbering, but familiar shades such as Golden Yellow, Orange and Burnt Orange work beautifully in traditional patterns. At troutcatchers, we are delighted to have a proper pure-silk option for these dressings again.

Ephemera Pure Fly Tying Silk Key Features and Benefits

  • Fine pure-silk thread lays down smooth, close turns for beautifully slim North Country spider bodies.
  • Natural silk lustre and the way it changes shade when wet bring authentic character to classic dressings.
  • A generous choice of well-matched colours lets you follow traditional recipes or experiment confidently.
  • Excellent for spiders, wet flies, classic salmon flies and even traditional rod-guide whipping.

Top Tips for Using Ephemera Pure Fly Tying Silk

  • Use a little suitable tying wax when a pattern or your tying style calls for extra grip.
  • Wind touching turns with light tension to let the silk finish show without a bulky underbody.
  • Try a small test body wet to see the final colour before dressing a whole batch.
  • For traditional Partridge & Orange dressings, compare the Orange and Burnt Orange shades rather than relying on a historic colour number.

Fly Patterns and Uses for Ephemera Pure Fly Tying Silk

  • Partridge & Orange – a simple, slender silk body under a sparse soft hackle.
  • North Country spiders – classic silk bodies in olive, primrose, yellow and other traditional colours.
  • Traditional wet flies – smooth silk bodies with a subtle shine.
  • Classic salmon flies – fine coloured silk where thread and finish matter.

Ephemera Pure Fly Tying Silk Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ephemera a good replacement for Pearsall Gossamer Fly Tying Silk?

Absolutely. Fly tyers who enjoyed Pearsall’s have taken to Ephemera with great success. It is a superb pure silk in its own right, with a lovely finish. The colours are close in spirit rather than exact historical matches; you can also compare our Pearsall Gossamer listing.

Which Ephemera shades work for traditional spiders?

Golden Yellow, Orange and Burnt Orange are useful starting points. Choose the shade that best suits your dressing and remember that silk often darkens when wet.

Should I wax this silk?

A light application of suitable tying wax improves grip and can help on traditional silk-bodied dressings. Use just enough to suit the pattern and the finish you want.

Can I buy a full colour selection?

Yes. Our Ephemera Silk Calzolari Selection is ideal if you tie a wide range of classic spiders and want the full palette to hand.

Can it be used beyond trout flies?

Yes. It is also a lovely choice for classic salmon dressings and traditional rod-guide whipping.
